The Art of Hashtag Alchemy

SMM

When I first started in social media, I thought hashtags were just pound signs people slapped on posts. Boy, was I wrong. After managing accounts for that security company back in Jersey, I realized hashtags are basically free advertising when you use them right.

Here's what I've learned about turning #basic hashtags into #gold:

The Hashtag Triple Threat

I use this formula for every client account, and it works across platforms:

Type Count Purpose Example
Broad 1-2 Discoverability #marketing #socialmedia
Niche 3-5 Finding your people #instagramforbusiness #smmlips
Branded 1-2 Community building #ryanmuellertips #smmwizard

The magic happens when you combine all three. I tested this with identical posts for a coffee shop client - one with random hashtags, one with the triple threat approach. The strategic post got 76% more engagement.

Platform-Specific Secrets

Each platform has its own hashtag culture:

  • Instagram: Use all 30 hashtags, but hide them in the first comment so you don't look desperate. I've tested this dozens of times - posts with 30 relevant hashtags consistently outperform those with fewer.
  • Twitter: 1-2 hashtags max. More than that and engagement drops off a cliff. I learned this the hard way when I used 5 hashtags on a client's tweet and it performed worse than posts with no hashtags at all.
  • LinkedIn: 3-5 hashtags, worked into the text naturally. My most successful LinkedIn post (187K impressions) used just 3 hashtags that were relevant to the industry conversation.

The Hashtag Research Process

Don't just guess! Here's my actual process:

  1. Start with competitor research - I literally keep a swipe file of hashtags used by successful accounts in my clients' niches
  2. Use tools like Grum or All-Hashtag to find related tags
  3. Check the volume - on Instagram, I look for hashtags with between 10K-500K posts. Below 10K is too small, above 500K is too competitive.
  4. Create hashtag groups in a notes app for different types of content

The Banned Hashtag Problem

Here's something most people don't know: some innocent-looking hashtags are actually banned or restricted. I once used #desk on a client's WFH post, not knowing it was restricted at the time. The post got almost zero reach.

Now I always check hashtags on banned hashtag lists before using them.

Hashtag Timing Matters

This blew my mind when I discovered it. Hashtags have peak times! For a fitness client, using #workout at 5-7am got way more engagement than using it at noon. People browse specific hashtags at specific times.

If you want to dive deeper into social media strategy beyond hashtags, check out my post on Meme Marketing - it's another game-changer for engagement.

Remember, hashtags aren't just afterthoughts - they're powerful tools for getting your content seen by the right people. Use them strategically and watch your engagement grow.
